One reason that I’m at @automattic. At the monthly Zoom company-wide townhall, @photomatt mentions that people are taking less time off with the current state of the world and requests that we consider taking some time to unplug.

Also suggested that teams may consider all taking the same week off to help everyone unplug without feeling like they may be missing something. Usually, that’s hard with everyone’s personal life events, but maybe actually easier to execute right now.
It isn’t work-life balance. It’s a recognition and understanding that work is part of life. They’re integrated—whether companies admit it or not—and so work has to respect that within its proper context.
I’m about to hit seven years at a8c. Having a kid randomly pop into a video chat or taking a quick brb because a kiddo needed help with homework isn’t new and is absolutely compatible with being a professional.
It can require some active effort to figure it out for you, though.
