While today is international Labor Day, it is the feast of St. Joseph the Worker in the Church. It’s a reminder that Joseph—and Jesus before his ministry—were both “just” carpenters. Human work, however “common”, can be sanctified, offered to God, and is the backbone of society.

During Mass, we bless bread and wine—fruit of the earth, fruit of the vine and the work of human hands. Work is sacred and shouldn’t be exploited nor separated in concept from those engaged in it.

In Church, this may not get a mention today. It’s Sunday so the celebration of the 3rd Sunday of Easter outranks the celebration of St. Joseph the Worker, but still important to recall.
