The longer that I’m a manager and am able to work with HR to make sure I’m doing my best on behalf of the company when having hard conversations with direct reports, I think employees should have an advocate on their end to help ensure they’re doing the best on their own behalf.

I know that unions provide a lot of collective bargaining things and I think people think of them in that light most (or at least I did), I think the ability to provide someone who is solely in the employee’s corner is an underrated benefit.

I still would want to act as fair as possible, but I would like some pushback from an employee’s advocate to hold me accountable that I’m providing my end of the bargain as a lead.
