One thing that bugs me about the impeachment conversation.
A former official wasn’t impeached. He was the sitting president at the time of his impeachment. The trial is happening after his term ended.

Since disqualification is a penalty of impeachment, which can and does apply to individuals whose terms ended or resigned post-impeachment, I don’t understand why this is confusing.
Of course, a case of someone who resigns just before being impeached (Belknap), that’s an interesting question. They impeached someone who had already resigned. The Senate held the trial, but that’s a more interesting question.
If that post-resignation impeachment is constitutional, how long of a window after the end of office does the House have to impeach? But, that’s not the issue here. For better or worse, the House did ensure he was impeached prior to the 20th.
