I didn’t understand older people’s constant recall of the JFK assassination as a defining moment until looking back at what Columbine and 9/11 mean to me. Both of those events ushered in a new era in our communal psyche.

The impact is still felt through school safety protocols, airline travel, the Patriot Act, and more. It is hard to explain to kids how much things changed.
