To Cut The Cord?

Vanessa and I had a Lenten conversation last night. It wasn’t particularly spiritual, but it was sacrificial. In our review of life, one thing we both admit is we watch too much TV. We don’t watch anything bad, just too much. Throw in a DVR and we’re recording hours of shows that we would, previously, only watch if we happen to not be busy when it was aired.

When a show ends in a cliffhanger, it’s 11 p.m. and we’re tired, what we to do? More often than not, we talk ourselves into watching the next one.

In our conversation, we finally said it. Should we drop cable?

Since we’ve been married, we’ve had cable. Originally, it was thrown in by the HOA in the condo we had. Now, it’s a less-expensive-than-retail-but-added-on feature of the HOA.

I don’t want to, but I don’t have a good reason to keep it. We’ve started watching more and more PBS (read: don’t need cable) and I’ve worked up a media center that I haven’t built yet (read: haven’t set aside the couple hundred needed to make what I want) that I could easily add a DVR function to for the OTA programming that we want. Most of what we watch is also available online, maybe delayed a few days or a week, but we haven’t watched anything in real-time in awhile. Sure, harder to skip the commercials online, but that’s a fine price to pay.

And so, we inch close to cutting the cord.
